Plant neighbours shape fungal assemblages associated with plant roots: A new understanding of niche?partitioning in plant communities

چکیده

Understanding the assembly rules of mycorrhizal fungi is crucial, given their tremendous importance in plant nutrition and health. Differentiation plant-associated arbuscular (AMF) likely driven by a host-preference effect. Coexisting species may then affect focal microbiota through fungal dispersal among plants, preferential recruitment AMF. Both mechanisms are shaped plant's phylogenetic functional strategies. We expected that (a) structure AMF assemblages associated with depends on identity neighbouring species; (b) this effect would be predicted similarity between species. These predictions were tested during first stages growth, simulating early development plants within community Using an experimental matrix-focal design testing 15 from five taxonomic families, we demonstrated provided different pools for plant, Medicago truncatula, influenced communities especially terms richness but not relative evenness. truncatula grown Brassicaceae or other Poaceae displayed respectively no low compared to those Rosaceae Asteraceae effects weakly dependent distance proximity. enriched bore more resemblance when functionally dissimilar one. Functional dissimilarity was only significant predictor based traits characterizing nutrient use uptake strategy rather than integrated growing plant. Microbiota composition shown particularly its below-ground niche. At colonization stage, arrives community, mycobiota might spatial distribution already present community. This work suggests new view concept niche partitioning space microorganism-plant interactions.

A REVISION OF PLANT-ASSOCIATED VERTICILLIUM SPECIES

Molecular approaches were used to re-evaluate the morphological criteria used to identify plant-associated Verticillium species. ITS-RFLPs divided the 31 studied strains of seven Verticillium species, (including the type species V. luteo-album) into four clusters. Cluster one comprised strains of the type species, V. luteo-album, cluster two V. albo-atrum, V. dahliae, V. nubilum and V. tricorpu...

Nematode assemblages in native plant communities of molokai, hawaii.

FOUR NATIVE PLANT COMMUNITY TYPES (IN DECREASING ELEVATION: montane bog, rain forest, wet mesic forest, drier forest) on Molokai were sampled for nematodes. Six samples of 10 cores each were gathered from each community. Nematodes were extracted from 200 cm(3) soil by elutriation. All extracted nematodes were counted and identified to species-level taxa. Sixty-seven species were identified amon...

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Mediation of Plant-Plant Interactions in a Marshland Plant Community

Obligate aerobic AMF taxa have high species richness under waterlogged conditions, but their ecological role remains unclear. Here we focused on AM fungal mediation of plant interactions in a marshland plant community. Five cooccurring plant species were chosen for a neighbor removal experiment in which benomyl was used to suppress AMF colonization. A Phragmites australis removal experiment was...

Distinctive fungal communities in an obligate African ant-plant mutualism.

Three ant species nest obligately in the swollen-thorn domatia of the African ant-plant Vachellia (Acacia) drepanolobium, a model system for the study of ant-defence mutualisms and species coexistence. Here we report on the characteristic fungal communities generated by these ant species in their domatia. First, we describe behavioural differences between the ant species when presented with a c...

Plant stress signalling: understanding and exploiting plant-plant interactions.

When plants are attacked by insects, volatile chemical signals can be released, not only from the damaged parts, but also systemically from other parts of the plant and this continues after cessation of feeding by the insect. These signals are perceived by olfactory sensory mechanisms in both the herbivorous insects and their parasites. Molecular structures involved can be characterized by mean...
